What is the 3 second rule in Website Design?
The 3 second rule simply implies that a website has 3 seconds to load and engage the user. The longer it takes, the less likely someone will stay on your website.
This rule has progressed quickly. There are reddit threads from 2 years ago referencing this as “the 8 second rule”. And within that thread, users more recently discuss that the rule is probably down to 1-2 seconds at this point.
That modern searcher is impatient, and makes decisions rapidly. It’s important to grab attention in the search results (SEO, meta information, and schema are helpful with this), and then if you’re lucky enough to get a click, the page had better be relevant and attention-grabbing upon a speedy arrival.
